How to prepare for a window cleaner

A few small steps that can make an exterior window clean easier and safer.

You usually won't need to do much before an exterior window-cleaning visit. But a few practical checks can save time and avoid missed areas.

1. Think about access to the back

Does the cleaner need to use a side gate, shared passage or garden? If a gate is locked, make arrangements in advance. Let the provider know if access involves steps, narrow paths or changes in level.

2. Move fragile items away from windows

Lightweight ornaments, plant pots and other items close to exterior glazing can be difficult to work around. Make sure valuable or breakable items are secure without creating a trip hazard elsewhere.

3. Let the cleaner know about pets

If a dog uses the garden, ask how access will be handled. This helps keep the cleaner, pets and household safe. It also avoids an unexpected gate being left open.

4. Mention delicate or damaged surfaces

Loose trims, cracked panes, damaged seals and recently painted frames are worth flagging. Window cleaning isn't a repair service, and the provider may need to adjust or avoid particular areas.

5. Clarify the extras

If you have a conservatory roof, solar panels, unusual rooflights or interior glass, ask whether these can be included and how they will be priced. Standard external window cleaning doesn't automatically mean every type of glazing.
