How to clean windows without leaving streaks

A simple approach to ordinary glass, frames and sills, with safety in mind.

Clean windows are often more about the preparation and drying method than about using a strong chemical. For safe, reachable glass, a mild solution, clean cloths and a suitable squeegee can be effective. If the window is high or difficult to reach, it's sensible to ask about professional exterior window cleaning instead of leaning out or climbing to reach it.

Start with the frames and sills

Brush away loose cobwebs and dust. Wipe accessible frames and sills with a soft cloth and suitable mild cleaning solution, following the frame manufacturer's instructions. Doing this first stops grime from the frame running down onto the glass you've just cleaned. Avoid abrasive pads on plastic frames, coatings and painted timber.

Wash the glass a section at a time

Use a clean, non-abrasive applicator or cloth and a small amount of suitable window-cleaning solution. Work from the top of the reachable pane downwards. On large smooth glass, a properly sized squeegee can remove water consistently; wipe its rubber blade with a clean cloth between passes to limit streaking. Finish the edges with a dry lint-free cloth.

Why do windows sometimes dry streaky?

  • Too much detergent leaves residue behind.
  • A dirty cloth or worn squeegee blade spreads grime instead of lifting it.
  • Strong direct sunshine may dry the cleaning solution before it's removed.
  • Water running from a dirty frame can mark freshly cleaned glass.

What about upstairs windows?

Never balance on a windowsill, lean out of an upstairs opening or use an unsuitable ladder simply to reach glass. Professional cleaners may use suitable water-fed pole systems from a safe position at ground level, subject to the layout and access. Read how traditional and water-fed cleaning differ before deciding what suits the property.

When is a professional clean worth considering?

Regular exterior cleaning can save time when there are many windows, hard-to-reach upper floors or large glazed doors. A first clean may also take extra effort if frames and sills have not been maintained.
