How to clean block paving without damaging it

How to remove ordinary dirt and growth while protecting joints and paving.

Block paving can collect dirt, moss and weeds between individual blocks. Cleaning the surface can improve its appearance, but care matters because the sand between the joints helps keep the paving stable. If your driveway has loose blocks or sinking sections, those defects need appropriate attention before aggressive cleaning.

Begin with dry cleaning

Sweep away leaves, soil and grit with a stiff but suitable outdoor brush. Remove loose weeds from accessible joints without digging out sound bedding or disturbing paving. This initial sweep reveals cracked blocks, loose sections and drainage issues that you may otherwise miss.

Try a gentle clean first

For light dirt, water and an appropriate brush may be enough. Where using a cleaning product, check that it is suitable for the exact paving material and follow the manufacturer's dilution, rinsing and environmental instructions. Protect nearby plants and avoid washing dirty water into surface drains where that would be inappropriate.

Can you pressure wash block paving?

Some stable block-paved surfaces can be pressure washed, but high pressure, narrow jets and poor technique can dislodge jointing sand or damage worn blocks. Keep clear of unstable edges and choose equipment and settings that suit the paving. If you are unsure about the surface, have it assessed. Our block-paving pressure-washing guide explains the risks in more detail.

What happens to the sand between the blocks?

After cleaning and drying, joints may need fresh kiln-dried sand or other suitable treatment. Re-sanding should only follow the paving manufacturer's or an appropriate specialist's guidance. It is not automatically included in every professional driveway cleaning quote.

When would a professional cleaner help?

Large drives, extensive moss, oily marks and difficult access can be time-consuming. A professional should assess the paving condition, drainage and finishing requirements before quoting. You can explore a cleaning estimate for your driveway without booking anything.
