Before estate-agent photographs or viewings, it's natural to focus on the rooms inside. But the first impression begins outside: the approach to the house, entrance, windows and garden areas all contribute to how the property looks.
Start with the front of the property
Clear general clutter from the approach and check whether the door, exterior glass and nearby frames need attention. A window clean can help remove everyday marks that stand out in bright listing photographs.
Look at patios and paths
Discoloured paving, algae and other surface deposits can make an outside area look tired. Cleaning may improve the appearance, but the method should be suitable for the material. Damaged pointing and loose paving need separate consideration; cleaning won't repair them.
Don't overlook the gutters
Visible vegetation and overflowing gutters can attract attention for the wrong reasons. If you notice overflow, describe it to an appropriate professional. Clearing debris differs from washing stained external fascia and gutter surfaces.
What about roof moss or conservatory glazing?
These are more specialist jobs and may not be suitable for a rushed clean immediately before photographs. Ask for a review of access and surface condition before deciding what is worthwhile.
How far ahead should you plan?
If you have a date for photography or viewings, include it with your enquiry. Availability can't be guaranteed, especially for a one-off clean, so it's better to ask early. Prioritise the work that affects the main entrance and areas visitors will actually see.
