How to clean a patio and remove everyday grime

A step-by-step look at patio materials, algae, drainage and cleaning methods.

A patio can look tired after months of wet weather, fallen leaves and general use. Before choosing a cleaner or using a pressure washer, work out whether the surface is concrete, porcelain, sandstone, limestone or something else. Different patio materials need different treatment, particularly where slabs or pointing are old.

Clear the area and inspect the slabs

Move light furniture and pots out of the way. Sweep away leaves and grit, then check for cracks, loose paving, damaged pointing and areas where water pools. Cleaning improves appearance, but it will not repair a faulty base or poor drainage.

Clean lightly soiled paving first

Start with a suitable soft or medium brush and water, as recommended for the material. If a cleaning product is needed, use one specifically compatible with that surface and follow the label. Test an inconspicuous section first. Be particularly careful with natural stone and delicate finishes; the wrong chemicals can cause discolouration or damage.

What about green algae and moss?

Green growth can build up where paving stays shaded and damp. Carefully remove loose material and keep nearby drainage clear. If growth is persistent, use only treatments suitable for the paving, nearby planting and water run-off. Do not mix different cleaning products.

Is jet washing a good idea?

Pressure washing can be effective on some robust paving but may loosen pointing, damage soft stone or force water into weak joints. A particularly strong jet is not automatically better. For larger or delicate areas, ask about professional patio cleaning and have the surface assessed before agreeing a method.

How should you prepare a professional enquiry?

Send a rough size, a photograph of the paving and any damaged joints, plus your postcode. Mention steps, narrow side access or difficult drainage. You can read why patio and driveway cleaning differ or explore an estimate for a possible clean in East Anglia.
