How often should gutters be cleared?

Why there is no single schedule for every gutter and the signs to look out for.

There's no universal gutter-clearing timetable. A home beneath mature trees may collect leaves quickly, while a less sheltered property may have fewer obvious blockages. Gutter condition and local weather also play a part.

Signs it's worth checking

  • Rainwater spills over one edge rather than reaching the downpipe.
  • Plants, leaves or moss are visible from ground level.
  • There are recurring damp marks near an overflowing section.
  • Debris often collects after windy weather or autumn leaf fall.

When might gutters need closer attention?

If trees overhang the roof or a nearby roof sheds moss, inspecting the guttering more regularly may be sensible. After strong winds, observe how water runs during the next rainfall from a safe location. Never stand beneath unstable fittings or climb to inspect without appropriate equipment.

Is cleaning the outside enough?

No. Washing the outside of guttering and fascia boards is mainly about appearance; it does not necessarily remove leaves and silt inside. When you enquire, describe whether you're concerned about the flow of water or how the roofline looks.

What if a blockage keeps returning?

The cause may be more than debris. Repeated overflow can involve the fall of a gutter, joints or a blocked downpipe. An appropriate inspection may be necessary. Cleaning isn't a substitute for fixing a damaged system.
