Solar panels are exposed to rain, wind, pollen, birds and dust. Some deposits are washed away naturally, while others can remain. Whether a clean is worthwhile depends on what is on the surface and how the panels are installed.
What kinds of deposits appear on panels?
Bird mess, leaves, pollen and dirt may collect on accessible areas of a panel. The extent varies with roof angle, surrounding trees and local conditions. Visible dirt doesn't always tell you exactly how much it affects generation.
Will cleaning increase electricity output?
It may help in some circumstances, but no particular improvement or financial saving is guaranteed. Weather, season, shading, inverter performance and the condition of the system all influence the figures. Consider the condition of the panels rather than assuming every array needs routine cleaning.
Is it safe to clean panels yourself?
Roof access and electrical equipment bring serious risks. Never climb onto the roof or use unsuitable tools to reach panels. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and arrange an appropriate assessment where access is difficult.
What would a cleaner need to know?
- The number of panels.
- Whether they're roof-mounted, on an outbuilding or ground-mounted.
- The roof height and safe access arrangements.
- Whether the panels are visibly soiled or have known damage.
